The Maya civilization is one of the most captivating in history and Belize was once at the center of it all after the Maya city of Caracol in Western Belize was said to have defeated Tikal in a war in the 800's B.C.
Pre-Colombian Americas era, the Maya were the only people known to have developed astrology, art, architecture and mathematical systems, all of which were developed during the pre-classic period 2000 to 250 BC.
In the ball courts of Maya temples, the captain of the winning team was decapitated as a sign of respect and in the Xibalba (shee-bal-ba), the Maya underworld deep in the cave systems of Belize, sacrifices were made to the gods. Today, these cave systems and Maya cities bear testament to a race that vanished as mysteriously as they flourished and offer up amazing adventure and exploration.
