A Summer Treat with a Belizean Twist

Belize is one of the most fascinating countries in the Americas – and we’re not just talking about the incredible Maya temples, mind-blowing reef, and lush jungles. We’re also a country filled with cultural diversity!

During your trip you’ll of course hear English, the national language, as well as Spanish, Kriol, Garifuna and even Mandarin. Our slice of paradise is a melting pot of different cultures!

Most Belizeans are of multiracial descent: Maya, European, Kriol, Latina, and Garifuna are the largest ethnic groups, but we also have East Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, and North American people who call Belize their home. One group which you might be surprised to find here are the Mennonites – a conservative people who came from the US & Canada decades ago and now are just as Belizean as anyone. You’ll see them at the farmer’s market selling their wares, and maybe even on the road – they’re pretty easy to spot with their traditional modes of transportation!

But by far the best way for visitors to interact with the Mennonite people is at the small stand on the side of the road on the renowned Hummingbird Highway. Here you’ll find the best ice cream in the world!
