Explorer Series: Expert Guide Brandon Gudiel

“I want to give a special shout-out to our driver and tour guide Brandon…this young man was such a joy to hang out with and he had tons of great history and cultural information about the area and Belize as a whole. After our trip to the Mayan Ruins with him the first day we specifically asked for him for our cave tubing and zip line trip.” A Ka’ana guest from Denton, Texas

That’s the kind of thing we’re used to hearing at Ka’ana about guides like Brandon Gudiel. He’s been taking guests on adventures around Cayo for over four years, and he’s become quite the fan favorite!

We sat down with him to talk about what makes guiding in Western Belize so special.

What do you enjoy most about tour guiding?

I enjoy being with different people every day from various parts of the world. As a tour guide I especially enjoy being able to showcase our wonderful cave systems and Maya temples every day!

Growing up in Cayo, what do you think makes this area a special place to visit? And why?

I have to say the ATM Cave System. All the evidence of ancient Maya activity within the cave system, the visible human remains and treasure of ceramic pots makes this cave one of the most sacred – and adventurous! – systems in all of Belize.

In addition to ATM, there’s also the Xunantunich Maya Ruins which are just ten minutes away from Ka’ana Resort. This is where the Mayas built their second tallest building in the country. There are many other amazing sights, as well… especially Caracol with the largest Maya temple in the region.

What tour are you best known for and why?

The tour I believe I’m best known for would be Caracol. Throughout my years being a tour guide, I’ve been to this site a lot and have been mentored by many older tour guides. The site itself contains a lot of evidence of original writing, stelae and altars. It also contains a lot of history of different rulers that controlled the site from the progenitor to the last ruler. One important fact about Caracol is this site was more powerful than Tikal for a period of time.

Can you share with us one of your favorite guest stories?

For me, there is no one story that I consider to be the best. However, what I do find interesting is that I will meet guests that have been to Belize several times and in every visit, their experience becomes better and better. They are always amazed of how our small country has so much to offer. Some even say that one or two weeks is not enough to explore the entire country!
