“If you want an out of this world destination wedding – stop looking because everything else will pale by comparison.” – Tanya on TripAdvisor
Here at Ka’ana we’ve hosted anniversaries, birthdays, honeymoons, engagements, best friend reunions, and countless other special occasions. But nothing quite compares to the joy of hosting a destination wedding!
Over the years we’ve helped countless adventurers plan their perfect day: from the first look on our jungle yoga deck to a ceremony on top of the world and a reception under the stars catered by our master chefs and mixologists.
Recently we asked an incredible couple, Tanya & Jason Jones, to tell us a bit about their experience planning a destination wedding in Belize – and why they chose Ka’ana to help them make it a reality!
Tell us a bit about yourselves and why you wanted to have a destination wedding.
Jason and I were introduced by a mutual friend and although we were instant friends neither of us had any interest in marriage – a fact that was known to everyone. We quickly realized we were soul mates and, three years later when we did decide to get married, we chose a destination wedding because we wanted to focus on our dreams and each other without the stress and drama of a big local wedding.
Why did you choose the Belizean jungle?
We talked with several travel agents about unique and exotic weddings. We had three finalists.
1. While on Safari in Africa. Although we loved this idea, it seemed too difficult to plan and we weren’t sure how to get a wedding dress to the Serengeti.
2. The Ice Hotel in Canada. Again, loved the idea, but finding we were looking for warmer weather.
3. The Mayan Ruins in Belize. We absolutely loved this idea. The ruins looked amazing, it all looked exactly like what we were looking for so we found a local event planner (Lara Goldman with Romantic Travel Belize) and she took it from there!
What was it like having one of the most important moments of your life happen on top of a Maya temple?
I wish we could put it into words, but it’s really not possible. The pictures speak more than our words ever will.
That they do! The great Jose Luis Zapata knows how to capture the true personality of a couple.
What was the most unexpected detail?
The wonderful staff at Ka’ana. More than anything they became our family and friends. They went above and beyond our wildest most glamorous dreams to make our day (in fact our entire trip) the most memorable event of our lives. We love you guys!!
What would your advice be to other couples thinking about getting married in an unusual locale?
Our advice would be to absolutely do it. You’ll never have any regrets. The key to it being something you, your spouse, your family and friends all talk about forever is to trust the local experts. The locals will be able to tell you what works best and what doesn’t. Don’t try and recreate a country club or church wedding from your home country at an unusual location. Trust them to provide the local traditions and flare so that it’s a truly unique and exotic experience. With the local experts seeing to the details, you’ll have nothing to stress about and only loving bliss leading up to and on your special day.
Final question: When are you coming back to Ka’ana? We’d love to host you for an anniversary trip!
We are coming back as soon as we possibly can. We wanted to come for our anniversary trip but our wonderful family and friends had other plans and arranged for a night’s stay at a beautiful lodge at the Ngorogoro Crater, so we’ll be in Tanzania for our first anniversary.
Sounds like a perfect place for two of our favorite adventurers! We can’t wait to hear all about it when you return to our corner of paradise one day. You’re always welcome in our home!
