Luxury suites and villas at San Ignacio Belize

San Ignacio & Cayo

Cayo is the inland Belize that rewards your curiosity. Ancient Maya cities rise above river valleys. Caves that the Maya entered as Xibalba — the underworld — still hold the ceramics and remains they left behind, exactly where they placed them more than a thousand years ago. Waterfalls cut through pine-covered landscapes, and San Ignacio brings the region together through markets, food and everyday life. From Ka’ana, just outside San Ignacio, you can explore it all and still return to a quieter hotel at the end of the day.

SAN IGNACIO — THE EVERYDAY HEART OF CAYO

SAN IGNACIO — THE EVERYDAY HEART OF CAYO

Spend time in San Ignacio to experience the everyday heart of Cayo. Browse the market, explore local restaurants and businesses, or simply walk through town. It is close enough to Ka’ana to become part of your day without turning into a full-day excursion.

MAYA SITES

Xunantunich offers an accessible introduction to ancient Maya architecture near the Mopan River — you cross the river on a hand-cranked ferry to reach it, then climb El Castillo for a view that reaches into Guatemala. Caracol rewards a fuller day with the scale of a major ancient city — at its height it held roughly ten times the population of Xunantunich, and its great pyramid, Caana, is still the tallest structure in Belize. If you want to extend your journey beyond Belize, you can also consider Tikal in Guatemala, with border logistics arranged in advance.

CAVES & RIVERS

CAVES & RIVERS

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) is one of Cayo’s defining experiences, combining active cave exploration with archaeology. You swim through the pool that guards its mouth, wade upriver in the dark and climb into a chamber where more than a thousand artifacts lie untouched — including the calcified skeleton known as the Crystal Maiden. National Geographic has named it the world’s top sacred cave, and only licensed guides may lead you in. Ka’ana has its own ATM guide, giving you a direct way to plan this high-demand experience through the hotel. Cave tubing and Barton Creek offer less strenuous ways to experience the region’s limestone and waterways.

MOUNTAIN PINE RIDGE & WATERFALLS

MOUNTAIN PINE RIDGE & WATERFALLS

Pine forest, granite, rivers and waterfalls make Mountain Pine Ridge feel markedly different from other parts of Belize. Choose it when you want swimming, scenery and a day outdoors without focusing solely on archaeology.

FOOD, WELLNESS AND TIME AT KA’ANA

FOOD, WELLNESS AND TIME AT KA’ANA

Not every day needs to take you away from the hotel. Choose a Maya Cooking Class, an Ool Spa treatment, time in the garden, a private dinner or simply an afternoon by the pool to keep your itinerary balanced and make Ka’ana itself part of your Cayo journey.

GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU COME

English is the official language of Belize, so there is no language barrier to navigate — though you will also hear Spanish, Belizean Creole and Maya languages through the course of a day in Cayo. The currency is the Belize dollar, fixed by law at two to one against the US dollar, which makes converting prices instant: halve any Belize dollar figure and you have the US price. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, and change usually comes back in Belize dollars.

Cayo sits inland in western Belize, a different country from the coast in feel: pine ridge and river valley instead of sea air, and archaeology instead of reef.
